Pinterest Bump

So earlier today I decided to pin one of my Flickr photos from Comic Con showing five nubile, female cosplayers dressed as adult-ish Disney princesses onto my Cosplay Corral pinboard on Pinterest (kind of frowned upon to pin your own stuff, but…). By 5:00 PT when Flickr resets its stat counting for a new day, this photo, with its 76 views (not one from someone I know personally), helped take my Flickr view count to 1173 for today. Not a personal one-day record, but it makes me take notice. And this again shows how influential Pinterest has become.

Booty Swing

Ever since I heard this song on a Las Vegas Cosmopolitan commercial, Electro Swing has become one of my new favorite genres.

Pine Tree Transplant

What should have been a relatively easy job turned into quite the task as we transplanted a pine tree that was cohabiting a large barrel pot with another tree. I waited too long to start this and their roots were impossibly intertwined. While I did have to do some necessary root-snipping, I’m hoping I saved enough of them for the newly relocated pine to survive. Both seem to be much happier for now although I’m sure they’ll miss each other on cold nights.

Our Own Gnatcatcher

While doing some gardening in the backyard, I finally captured some images of an endangered California Gnatcatcher whose protected nesting area covers some of the canyon behind our backyard. An unexpected surprise for me was how pretty its singing was.

On The Water

Wonderfully hypnotic video I found on Vimeo. Very well done.

Health Fair At Seaport Village

Met Sylvia and Rodrigo over at Seaport Village as they were out walking their fur-kids, Lilo and Stitch. We ended walking through a Health Fair that was going on at the same time and were given free samples of O.N.E. Coconut Water (which I surprisingly found kind of disgusting) as well as bottles of Solar Rain drinking water, sourced from ocean water and bottled locally. (I was so impressed with what they are doing that I ended up researching them online and “Liking” them on Facebook.) For entertainment the Fair had really good live music by Jerome Watson and Wazabe Blue, as well as some young hula dancers with live drummers. We walked around for a while and stopped at the Seaport Cookie Company, picking up a beverage (to drink with our home-brought cookies) so they could validate our parking. We sat and ate the cookies that Sylvia brought while enjoying a few classic rock songs performed in the gazebo by The Cat•illacs until we had to leave, the Tapias for home and me to pick up my friend Ron.

My Annual Toast

147 years ago today, my favorite president was mortally wounded and doomed to death a few hours later. Also on this day 100 years ago, the finest ship of its time hits an iceberg and is doomed to sink a few hours later, taking with it the lives of over 1,500 people.

Each year on this day I have a solemn toast to their memories.

Brenda’s New Glasses

Had another fun video chat with Brenda, my bestie friend in Austin, and she showed me the new glasses she recently got. I think they look great on her. Very natural. After cheersing video-style, I also had a chance to briefly chat with her brother, Mike, who was on speaker phone with her.

Video chatting is such a terrific way of keeping in personal touch with distant friends.

From The Mother Country…Finally

Finally witnessed the first viewing of my blog from Hungary. Wonder if we’re related. Ki tudja?

A Flickr Honor

One of my photos of Funani and Adhama, mother and son River Hippos at the San Diego Zoo, was added to a invite-only gallery on Flickr called E-Ticket of Excellence. The photo seems to be the most popular of that set of photos, although it’s only my second favorite. Still, a nice honor to have. There are some wonderful photos in this gallery. And because of that exposure it was also invited into another gallery, this one called Spectacular Animals, which is also invite only. A third gallery also asked me to exhibit it but it’s a bit more complicated to add.

Like a true exhibitionist, my sudden exposure is invigorating.

Visiting The Zoo With Three Girls

Before meeting up with my friend Angelica and her two daughters, I walked around taking pictures at the San Diego Zoo listening to my Photo Tunes playlist on my iPod. First ran into my friend Rick, the Zoo’s ambassador, and we talked about his upcoming Today Show appearance and about the Gibbon Conservation Center emails I sent him.

Since it was still so close to opening, I headed down towards the Malayan Tigers and Hippos, first stopping briefly at the Johnston’s Crocodiles. I got lucky with the tigers being active, but very unlucky with the quality of the photos. Kind of the same story with the hippos. Making my way further into the Zoo I got a funny sleeping picture of Gao Gao, the male Giant Panda. The Grevy’s Zebras were busy eating, as were all the Southern Gerenuks and Lesser Kudus. No luck with the Polar Bears, who were sleeping behind a hill.

I rode the Skyfari back towards the entrance to meet the girls. They hadn’t arrived yet so I hopped over to the Orangutans who almost never disappoint. This time it was eight year-old Cinta who gave me some good material to shoot. Also got to squeeze in some Armadillo Girdled Lizards and a Henkel’s Leaf-tailed Gecko.

Met up with the girls and we headed straight for the Children’s Zoo to see the Meerkats before entering the Bug House. There I got shots of a giant New Guinea Stick Insect that a keeper was handling, as well as a Giant Katydid and a few others whose pictures did not come out very well.  Then it was time for some hands-on fun at the Petting Zoo.

Following that we stopped so the kids, bizarrely enough, could get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny…four days after Easter.  Then it was off to lunch, with Angelica and I getting sandwiches at The Sandwich Company, and the girls getting a hot dog and pizza at the Lagoon Terrace right next door. After lunch we stopped briefly inside one of the stores to see what the kids might like to get later.

Then it was time to finally see some big animals, including the rhinos, giraffes and Bactrian Camels. After that we spent some time at Elephant Odyssey checking out the Elephants, Guanacos and Capybaras. We tried the Polar Bears again but they weren’t very active. We walked passed the long line at the Giant Pandas and through the exit door they got to see Gao Gao eating.

Last stop before leaving was to see the Lowland Gorillas and the Orangutans.

It may have been my eighth visit just this year, but I had a really fun time experiencing it through the eyes of young children.

Another Visit From Ronbo

My high school buddy, Ron, came in for his second of six San Diego visits this month. I went down to the airport to capture his plane coming in, which with how much I had to walk and that he was a few minutes early, I made just in time. He was the captain and pilot of the American Airlines 737. I had parked by the County Administration building and, once Ron’s plane landed, I walked along the bay for a while acting touristy until I heard from him. I meandered passed the Maritime Museum with its USS Dolphin submarine and  Star of India tall ship. Walked as far as the cruise ship terminal where the gigantic Celebrity Infinity was temporarily berthed.

Later I picked Ron up and we headed for Old Town to walk around, checking out the shops before meeting up with our other arriving classmate, Barbara, for dinner at Miguel’s Cocina. It was my first time at this place and I definitely will be going back. Not my favorite place in Old Town for tacos, but the ambience was friendly, the company was great, and my chili relleno and shredded beef taco were very good. And they serve their famous white jalapeño sauce with chips.

Growing Hummingbird Chick

Latest update photo of the Hummingbird chick growing in the Tapias’ backyard patio. This photo unfortunately confirms that a second chick did not survive. Not unusual, but sad. It also shows the surviving chick doing really well so far.

Chinese Lunch With Friends

Had an unscheduled lunch with three close friends, Rodrigo, Sylvia and Mary. We thoroughly enjoyed some of the best Chinese food anywhere, at Mandarin Canton in Chula Vista. The three of us shared heaping plates of Szechwan shrimp, cashew chicken, and salt and pepper chicken wings, and all three of which were extraordinarily good.

150th Food Spotted

After slowing down a bit, I finally reached my 150th post on Foodspotting and became a bronze seafood expert in the process.
