Car D’Ology

Took Mami for a scheduled cardiology appointment in the brand, spankin’ new UC San Diego Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. First time I ever saw patients in the reception/waiting area with light-up buzzers like you see at some restaurants. Better than the “Now Serving” numbers, I guess. At least the reception area was decked out with a festive Christmas tree.

Her cardiologist told her that the aortic aneurism that she lives with has been so steady for the last seven years that her semi-annual CT scans have now been made annual. With our light-up buzzers, it’s time to celebrate with a highly-salted Bloomin’ Onion with extra dip from Outback!

ZooKeeper Rick, Day Two

Second day for Rick Schwartz, the San Diego Zoo animal ambassador, to be on the Today Show.  Today he presented animals actually from our zoo, including Isa the fossa, a beautifully colored milk snake, Victor the echidna, and a crested porcupine named Ruva.

ZooKeeper Rick On TV

Rick Schwartz, Animal Ambassador for the San Diego Zoo (and friend of mine) had a segment this morning on the Today Show. He spoke to Matt, Ann and Al about the conservation efforts zoos around the world are making together to help save endangered species. He presented four animals, an African Penguin, a Chinese Alligator, Kayla the Kinkajou or Honey Bear and a West African Crane. He will have one more segment tomorrow as well.

Our Own Decorations

Put up our outside Christmas decorations this evening plus one on the inside. They may be meager and simple but they make my mom really happy. And a happy mom is a cooking mom.

Costco And A Tuna Melt

Went to Costco with Sylvia to pick up her home-made Christmas cards. We spent some time inhaling Hawaiian-made candle scents. Most of them were amazingly fragrant, in a good way. One, pictured below, smelled way better than I was expecting. On today’s warehouse snacking menu was terrific popcorn (caramel, cheddar cheese and zebra flavored), fantastically fresh California sushi rolls, tasty and warm lentil stew and ending with delicious cashews. After leaving Costco and picking Rodrigo up we three went to The Galley at the Marina for a long overdue lunch there. I had my usual scrumptious tuna melt with house chips. Parked in the lot were three really cool old-timey cars. I hope the Mercedes gets finished with its refurb. This was a good day.

Seeing Beyond Our Hearing

Took my mom for her follow-up ultrasound today. (Now doesn’t the title make sense?) Nice surprise to find a decorated Christmas tree and bake sale in the lobby. We bought a donut and two cookies to celebrate her conquering the procedure.

Video Tour By Brenda

Had a long-overdue video chat with Brenda that ended up lasting just over two hours. With her laptop camera she took me on a tour of all the Christmas decorations she put up inside her house in Austin. Brenda takes decorating very seriously and each year does an amazing job with it. I also got a chance to say hello to Musi, who unfortunately didn’t seem to really understand what was going on. (Thank you, Google video chat, for letting us do all this for free. And I had a really hard time whittling the screen captures down from the 196 that I took.)

Day Two Of Tapia Christmas Decorating

The second day of helping the Tapias decorate the outside of their house for Christmas crucially began with a delicious scrambled eggs and bacon breakfast, after which Sylvia got busy with drawing, cutting out, painting and decorating some larger candy-canes and gingerbread men to place at the front of the house. Rodrigo meanwhile was himself busy designing a faux Christmas tree made up of strands of colored lights, a la the Seaworld Skytower, only a tiny bit smaller, to be placed on the roof of their backyard studio. Going from his design he and I made a trip to Home Depot to pick up some necessary hardware supplies and to meet a friendly and exuberant, young Asian checkout person. For lunch we picked up some really good teriyaki chicken on the way back to their house. After filling our bellies with rice and de-feathered fowl we got back to the work at hand, Rodrigo cutting, sawing and sanding while Sylvia directed me where to install her handmade decorations. The final step was the three of us raising their fifteen-foot, strand-lit Christmas tree for all the neighborhood to see. I really liked the way it turned out. After putting away all the tools, empty boxes and ladders, we relaxed our decorating-stressed bodies, enjoying some Sylvia-made caramel corn while finally watching “Captain America” which I really liked a lot (especially Hayley Atwell who may have just made it onto my island). Thinking back on the movie I think my main disappointment was with Chris Evans’ performance. To me he seemed a bit too flat and uninteresting. But I loved the look and feel of the movie. And of course there was Hayley Atwell who was neither flat nor uninteresting.

(Thanks again to Sylvia taking pics of me.)

In The Christmas Spirit

The interesting portion of my day, which was spent helping Sylvia decorate the outside of their house for Christmas, began with her and I going to Michael’s to pick up a few minor crafty necessities, then quickly chowing down a bean burrito (actually, not an innuendo), climbing ladders and walking on her roof to install lights and garlands and to take pictures as if I were a giant, picking up some terrific Mexican food for dinner from a nearby Los Panchos, of which mine were three carnitas street tacos, and finally watching Disney’s “A Christmas Carol,” the Robert Zemeckis CG version with Jim Carrey. The decorations turned out great, the food was fantastic and the movie was an amazing accomplishment.

(Thanks go to Sylvia for taking most of the photos of me.)

Our Zoo In The 60s

I was recently given this flyer for the “World-Famed” San Diego Zoo that I’m guessing is from the early 1960s since there is no Coronado Bay Bridge, which began construction in 1967 and opened in 1969, on the location map on the back and that US 101 became I-5 in 1964. The photo of the little girl riding the Galapagos Tortoise is both priceless and humiliating for the poor tortoise. Odds are that tortoise is still walking around at the zoo. I think the write-up is hilarious with the 75¢ adult admission, being able to ride the “world’s longest moving sidewalk,” having “camera rentals” and that back then people regularly used the word “ample” without referring to someone’s bosom.

Last Time For This 22

For the final time this year (sniff) I flipped over my 22 calendars. That’s the sad news. The happy news is that it’s now the Christmas as well as my birthday month! So yay for Jesus, Santa, St. Nick, the Grinch, Frosty, Rudolph, Mr. HankeyJack, Jack and me. Disneyland, here I come! (Plus, I can now start looking for a year’s worth of all new replacement calendars!)

A Tiny Birthday Visitor

After our birthday dinner for my brother we found this little guy clinging to the living room curtains. He was missing the very tip of his tail. I think I shall call him Tippy. Caught him and kept him indoors for the night so he could stay safe and warm. Tomorrow he shall be a free Squamata once more.

Ozzie’s Birthday Dinner

Had all the San Diego family members gather for my older brother’s birthday dinner that my mom had made. It was pörkölt (Hungarian stew-like dish) with mashed potatoes and a few side dishes. Also had some brownie cake but I forgot to take pictures of that. There was no singing.

I Never Get Tired Of These

We had ourselves another amazingly colored sunset this evening. Maybe it’s the time of year. Whatever the reason for the bounty lately, I never get tired of enjoying them.
